While the New York Stock exchange-listed company employs more than 50,000 staff globally, its UK offering, with offices in Belfast, Teesside, Manchester, Basingstoke and Glasgow, is a compact operation, at 25 architects. Reflecting its international connections, work includes a number of projects for the Foreign & Commonwealth Office, including the recently completed British Consulate Office in Los Angeles and a British Embassy building in Asia.
Closer to home, URS director of architecture Trevor Leaker says the firm is proud of the new Visit Belfast Centre, a former bank whose existing external facade was re-clad in just 16 weeks. The centre opened in December, wowing the city’s Lord Mayor, Máirtín Ó Muilleoir, who described it as ‘world class’. Ongoing work with the city’s Royal Victoria Hospital includes a new children’s hospital next to the practice’s recently completed maternity wing. AMC
